The Golden Damrei Restaurant offers a cozy, straightforward spot for those interested in Cambodian-inspired flavors tucked into Kingston’s Gardiners Road neighborhood. Primarily catering to takeaway but with some limited seating, the space stays small and intimate, making it well-suited for a quiet lunch or an easy dinner away from busier dining destinations.

This restaurant's strength lies in its approachable, home-style dishes with a focus on fresh, crisp vegetables and bold, aromatic spices that often highlight traditional Cambodian ingredients like bamboo shoots and lemongrass. Popular dishes such as their Green Curry with chicken and bamboo shoots, as well as the Hot and Sour Bamboo Soup, are noted for both flavor and generous portions, making it appealing for diners seeking a hearty, satisfying meal.

The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, with a clean, quiet setting and friendly staff ready to guide visitors through the menu. While not a large social spot, it works well for those who appreciate a calm dining environment or want a quick, flavorful meal to take home. Because the kitchen can get quite busy during peak hours, visiting slightly off-peak times might make for a smoother ordering experience.

Those who enjoy discovering local expressions of Southeast Asian cuisine, including vegans and those wanting meat options, will find The Golden Damrei a pleasant, reliable option in the area. Its nuanced flavors provide a comforting break from more generic Asian eateries, and while prices hover on the higher side relative to portion size, many find the quality and freshness worth it.

  • Best for: Casual lunches or dinners featuring Cambodian fusion dishes with fresh vegetables and aromatic spices
  • Ideal visitors: Food lovers looking for home-style Cambodian flavors and generous portion sizes, including vegan diners
  • Best time to visit: Mid-afternoon or early evening to avoid the busiest rush and enjoy attentive service
  • Atmosphere: Quiet, cozy, and clean with a small footprint and mostly takeaway-focused seating

Eat there quite often, both lunch and dinner times. Try a different dish almost every time, and I have not been s disappointed with any

Cambodian food including vegan friendly options. I was blown away by how flavourful the food is and tastes homemade. I had the Sunshine Wok (lemongrass savoury), Green Curry (spicy flavourful) and Hot and Sour Bamboo Soup (big portion and yummy). All the vegetables were fresh and crisp, portions super generous and tofu soaks up all the flavour. I can’t recommend this restaurant enough.

The food here is pretty good, even though it is not authentically Cambodian. Food is a bit expensive, however. The store itself is small with a few places to sit, mostly a takeout thing.

Tried for the first time. Quiet, cozy atmosphere. Clean. Very friendly and polite staff. Food was fast and fresh. Not quite what we expected but still delicious.

Food is fantastic. Follow up to my previous review, it does get busy in there and it is a small space. Just be clear and repeat yourself as necessary and you will get the fantastic meal you ordered. Green and Red curry are the best in town.

Easily our favourite Thai/Cambodian restaurant in Kingston, they make a mean vermicelli Noodle bowl and their selection of curries can’t be beat. When not going the noodle bowl route we often do the Number One red curry or the slightly spicier Steve’s Number 6. Want to blow your face off try the Red Laval Spice, I’ve been eating their for years and they still warn me about the heat level each time. Friendliest owners/staff around.
